The red wines of Glenguin.
Glenguin Vineyard is planted on a north east facing slope just below Adams’ Peak in the Yengo National Park and above the sandy loam alluvial flats adjacent to the Wollombi Brook. The average vine age is 25 years. The gravelly soils have excellent drainage and allow the vine roots to penetrate several metres into the ground. No pesticides have been used at Glenguin. The vines are all trained and pruned by hand whilst the fruit is also hand picked at vintage time. Permanent grasses are maintained in the vineyard providing a healthy environment for insects, worms, beetles, spiders, lizards, the “Geese of Glenguin” and other wildlife. Cutting the grasses provides organic mulch to the vines.
Aristea / 100% Shiraz. The first 30 rows of gravel bench in front of the “Big Room” at Glenguin. The soils comprise river gravels and mixed ironstone with sandstone rocks. Average yield around one tonne per acre which is less than many Grand Cru vineyards in Burgundy. 100-150 dozen only.
Schoolhouse / 100% Shiraz. 2.9 acre vineyard adjacent to the old schoolhouse. Gravel and ironstone rocks in friable loam over sandstone floaters in clay at depth. Average yield around 1.5 tonnes per acre inside Grand Cru levels in Burgundy. 2014 is a stunning example of the unique terrior of Glenguin. 200-250 dozen only.
Ironbark / 90% Tannat /10% Shiraz. Our project wine. Unirrigated 2.6 acre block of shallow gravelly loam over a sandstone terrace. This ancient classic variety from south western France is ideal in our climate with its thick skins and high acid retention levels. Very low yield of 1.5 tonnes per acre. 2013 the final vintage and is as good as any we’ve produced. 150-200 dozen.
Stonybroke / 90% Shiraz / 10% Tannat. Hand-selected parcels of fruit from the Schoolhouse Block and a touch of Tannat from the rows along the driveway at Glenguin. A new planting of shiraz from some of the oldest vines in the Hunter will be used for Stonybroke in future vintages. Average yield of 1.5 tonnes per acre or below. 400-600 dozen made.
