As part of our ongoing series, Robin Tedder MW shares a quick tasting note of the 1971 vintage of Penfolds Grange Hermitage.
Medium shoulder, cellared by Robin Tedder MW since 1982.
Brick red rim, deep scarlet centre, intense aroma of spice and dried fruits. A wonderful, ethereal wine at nearly half a century. Intense complex flavours that just go on and on; combining savoury notes with christmas pudding. Huge length – but soft and balanced; settling nicely into late middle age. A vinous experience to treasure.
At Glenguin, the Schoolhouse Block is planted to a selection of shiraz clones made from the Penfolds field trials which were made in the years of early Granges. At 40-50 years of age the great shirazes of Hermitage, the Barossa and Hunter merge into a symphony of vinous pleasure the equal of any of the worlds most alluring long lived wines.
